About
Join us for the book discussion of A Moving Line, a celebration of India’s rich history of visual storytelling. Comic creator and visual artists Rahil Mohsin and Mia Jose will be in conversation with designer Kriti Monga to reflect on how storytelling in graphic narratives have evolved over centuries and the many nuances and developments in it.
This will be followed by an interactive Q&A with the audience.
About the book:
Stories, whether written or drawn, are always moving, reshaped by every generation that inherits and retells them. India has a long and rich history of visual storytelling, from temple walls and painted scrolls to comics, graphic novels and webcomics. Published by the Museum of Art and Photography, A Moving Line traces this history, revealing unexpected connections between works that are rarely considered together.
The eight essays and eleven graphic narratives in this collection range from the timeless to the future-forward. Bringing together contributions by scholars, practitioners and artists, this book explores the many nuances and developments in sequential storytelling.
A Moving Line celebrates a medium that has always been, and continues to be, inherently visual.
Meet the speakers:
Rahil Mohsin is a Bangalore-based comic artist, writer, and co-founder of Hallubol, the world’s first bilingual Dakhni-English comic series. With over 15 years in comics and illustration, he has worked with publishers, both international and local including Scout Comics, Scholastic, Sufi Comics and Comixense and is a familiar face in the thriving independent Indian comics scene. He has illustrated children’s books for Room to Read, while Pratham's Fayu & Dariya Ka Jinn marks his debut as both writer and illustrator. His work explores language, folklore, memory, food, and everyday life through comics and picture books. Rooted in his Dakhni Muslim identity and upbringing in Bangalore, his practice celebrates multilingual storytelling, cultural memory, neighbourhoods, and South Indian experiences.
Mia Shay Jose (she/they) is a trans artist and researcher from Kerala, currently based in New Delhi. Led by a keen sense of narrative, her work probes questions of gender, inheritance and embodiment in cultural stories, informed by her lived experiences of transition: of body, culture and faith. She approaches systems both through the lens of a transgender body and that of a legal researcher, searching for a reconciliation of conflicted parts essential to the self. Over the last 2 years, this search has led to Negotiations, a comic travelogue charting the policing of non-binary bodies across public spaces, Regards Your Skin, an anthology around self-policing and motherhood, and a public mural with trans communities in Kerala. Her primary interest is in the physical body as the primary site of violence - inflicted both by a deeply binary society, and as a consequence, the self. Across illustrations, writings, collage, installations and comics, her works are grounded in the dialogue between constructed identities and policed spaces.
